Did Northern Virginia (Falls Church, Fairfax, etc.) farmers migrate to other states?

Because now there is no Southern charm left in it. This area feels like a clone of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC... nothing for it to stand apart. But on the other hand, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, even New York (all Union states in the Civil War) feel so Southern. Could it be they started in what is now the VA suburbs of DC and were pushed out?
